Jada Pinkett-Smith Raises Awareness For Sexual Assault Victims
Jada Pinkett-Smith is taking a stand.
The actress, 42, is speaking up for rape victims following an incident in which her niece was recently drugged, though fortunately not assaulted.
“My niece was given a date rape drug,” Pinkett-Smith revealed to US Weekly about her 20-year-old niece. “Thank God that nothing happened, because she was with some responsible guys that took care of her, and with three of her friends.”
The Gotham actress first addressed the topic earlier this month after the hashtag #JusticeforJada began trending for 16-year-old Jada, who believes she was raped at a party when naked photos of her lying unconscious were leaked onto social media.
This is a current epidemic going on in regards of the treatment of women, and Pinkett-Smith plans to figure out how we can empower people in different ways. She is already at work to empower and educate her 13-year-old daughter, Willow, on the dangers of rape drugs. She had her niece sit down with Willow and a few of her friends to tell them about her experience.
“It’s one thing to sit with me as her mother: It’s like ‘Okay, Mom, yeah, I get that,’” said the mother of two about her unconventional ways of parenting. “But when you have your 20-year-old cousin that comes in, and she’s like ‘This is what happened,’ and it was somebody you looked up to as well, it’s like, ‘Oh, man, this is really real.’”
