Lesley McSpadden

Lesley McSpadden, mother of slain teen Mike Brown, will appear as a special guest on “Steve Harvey” in an emotional episode that airs today (Sept. 30).

The heartbroken mother sat down with Harvey to discuss not having a chance to properly grieve her son, and how the headlining death of her son has forever changed her life.

“Most people grieve in silence. I haven’t had any silence. I haven’t had any time to myself. I haven’t had any time to grieve at all,” McSpadden said in the interview.

Mike Brown, an unarmed 18-year-old black male was gunned down by Ferguson, Mo. police officer Darren Wilson only a week before he was set to start college.

The death of Brown became the subject of ongoing protests– both peaceful and violent– and a national conversation about racial police brutality.

Harvey offered his best advice to the mother, and the conversation gets even more emotional as Harvey discusses having to teach his sons how to act in the presence of a police officer.

“And for those out there who have to do like I do, because I have three sons and every time an incident happens like this, we have to go over, we have to go over the things again. Why do I have to teach my sons to assume the position? Why do I have to teach my sons ’10 and 2,’ palms up? I have to teach my son, when the window goes down, show both hands on both sides. Why am I teaching my sons this?” he says before tearing up.
