Eleven-Year-Old Charged With Infant Homicide

An 11-year-old suburban girl was charged with murder in the beating death of a 2-month-old baby by Cuyahoga County Coroner’s office found that the baby had massive injuries to her brain, liver, spleen and kidney.

The girl’s mother was babysitting the infant, Zuri Whitehead, to give the baby’s mother a break from caring for a newborn, police said.
However, after she fell asleep on the couch at approximately 3 a.m. on Friday, the girl took Zuri upstairs before returning 45 minutes later to wake up her mother with a badly injured infant in her arms. The baby was bleeding and her head was badly swollen, said Wickliffe Police Chief Randy Ice at a news conference Monday, Feb. 9.

At the hearing, the young girl standing at 4-feet tall and about 50 lbs, appeared in leg shackles as she sat beside her mother. Family members sobbed, while the scene made even seasoned prosecutors tear up, the affiliate reported.

However, Ice said the girl did not show any remorse. “I’m not sure she appreciated the gravity of what she did,” he said.
The girl cannot be tried as an adult as a child must be at least 14 years old in Ohio to be turned over to adult court. She is being held at the Lake County Juvenile Detention Center.

“We’re having a hard time getting our head around this,” Ice told reporters. “You don’t see something like this, hardly ever.”

Ice is considering counseling for the officers who responded to the scene.
