D.L. Hughley Opens Up About His Son’s Struggle with Autism
Actress and comedian D.L. Hughley shared an emotional story about his son Kyle, who has Asperger Syndrome, which caused him to break down during an Oprah: Where Are They Now? interview.
As a child, Hughley’s son was diagnosed with Asperger Syndrome. Today, Kyle is 26-years-old and a college graduate, but he still struggles in his daily life and has to follow a very regimented schedule.
“He graduated from college but everything has to be the same,” Hughley says. “He goes to work at the same time. He eats the same thing.”
Though Kyle has a routine, Hughley explained that one day his son decided to step out of his routine by putting gas in his car– a difficult task for the 26-year-old.
“Three weeks ago I had to get gas and he say ‘Daddy I’ll Do it.’ I’m a nervous wreck… So he comes back in and he gives me the receipt and the keys,” Hughley says before breaking down. “And I could not stop crying, because he did something he was afraid to do … I just didn’t believe he could do it. He did it.”
It was a defining moment for Kyle and a emotional moment for his father.
