Baltimore Mom Seen Slapping Son Explains Her Reaction
Meet Toya Graham: the mom who has become famous for the slap seen across America. The Baltimore mom made nation news when she was captured on video slapping her son and dragging him home after she saw him taking part in the riots in Baltimore on Monday (April 27).
Graham has been praised for her actions and called “Mom of the Year” by the media, but she doesn’t believe she did anything noteworthy.
“My intention was just to get my son and have him be safe and at that point I knew that whole scene was not safe,” said the concerned mother.
The riots began hours after Freddie Gray, 25, was laid to rest. The African-American man sustained a fatal spinal injury while in police custody and died at a hospital one week later on April 19.
The mom went on to explain that she had told her 16-year-old son not to go to the protest at the local mall. With strict instructions of what not to do, you can only imagine how infuriated the mom became when she found out her son intentionally defied her to be part of the unsafe rioting.
“To see my son come across the street with a rock in his hand, I think at that point, I just lost it,”she said. “For him to do what he was doing, it was just unacceptable.”
