Daughter Surprises Mother at Graduation

During Brenau University’s 2015 commencement, Debra Cooper anxiously waited for the moment she would receive her diploma for a Master of Occupational Therapy degree. After all of the hard work, the accomplishment was definitely a moment for tears of joy, but little did she know she was about to have more than one reason for tears of joy.

At the ceremony, President Ed Schrader gave his opening remarks, which included a special thank you to all the veterans. He gave special recognition to Cooper, who served in the U.S. Army, and her daughter, Staff Sgt. Markita James, who was currently serving in Afghanistan. But here’s the catch: Cooper’s daughter had actually planned a surprise homecoming for her mother’s graduation!

“Actually, Sgt. James is not in Afghanistan,” Schrader said. “She is here so that she could be with her mother at graduation.”

Shocked, Cooper turned around and saw her daughter standing behind her with flowers.

“Oh my God. Oh my God. Oh my God,” Cooper gasped.

The mother and daughter shared a sweet embrace that was emotional to watch.
