After addressing his own experiences as a chocolate-complexioned boy in the children’s book Chocolate Me!, Taye Diggs is releasing his second book Mixed Me!, inspired by his biracial son.

“This book as well as Chocolate Me! hits on identity. This one was inspired by my little boy, Walker Nathaniel Diggs,” he explained. “[He] is a product of a blended relationship. His mom is vanilla and I’m dark chocolate. I just wanted to write a little something that touched on their experiences.”

He went on to explain that he also pulled from some of the experiences of his cousin who is biracial and struggled with his identity while they were growing up.

“My cousin is of mixed race. People weren’t as comfortable with who they were and standing up for where they came from,” he said. “So this book touches on that and hopefully will make it even easier.”

Walker is Diggs’ 6-year-old son from his previous relationship with Idina Menzel.
