Malia Obama Celebrates 18th Birthday, Lands Summer Internship
Malia Obama, the eldest First Daughter of the United States, has grown up before America’s very eyes and now she’s officially an adult.
Malia celebrated her 18th birthday on July 4th, the same date that the White House hosted its Fourth of July party. Of course in true dad form, President Obama took a moment during the celebration to acknowledge Malia’s birthday, singing her “Happy Birthday” and getting Kendrick Lamar and Janelle Monae to join in the sing-along.
“And just because it’s a job of a father to embarrass his daughters, I’ve got one last job,” President Obama said at the end of his speech during the event. “It just so happens that we celebrate our country’s birthday on the same day that we celebrate my oldest daughter’s birthday.”
The oldest Obama daughter has opted to take a “gap year” before enrolling at Harvard University in fall of 2017, and now reports of how she plans to spend her time off are beginning to surface. According to Fox News Latino, Malia will complete a summer internship at the U.S. Embassy in Spain. The reason behind her decision was cited as possibly being related to her parents “friendship with the U.S. ambassador in Madrid, James Costos, and his romantic partner of 14 years, interior designer Michael S. Smith.”
Malia’s internship in Madrid could reportedly start as soon as Obama’s official visit to Spain (July 9 to 11) is over.
