Olympic Gymnast Gabby Douglas Unveils Her Own Barbie Doll
Olympic gymnast Gabby Douglas is the most recent inspirational Black woman to have her likeness immortalized in the form of a Barbie doll.
The 20-year-old champion took home all-around gold at the 2012 Olympic Games, recently secured her spot on the 2016 team, and now has her own Barbie that she hopes will help young girls embrace who they are. “Be yourself and really embrace your inner beauty and your true talent,” she told People in an exclusive interview. “Believe in yourself. Never let anyone tell you you can’t do something when you can.”
“Playing with Barbie allows girls to imagine everything they can become,” said Lisa McKnight, General Manager and Senior Vice President, Barbie. “While imagining you can be anything is the first step, seeing that you can is what makes all the difference. Role models like Gabby Douglas show girls that with determination and perseverance their potential is limitless.”
Gabby having her own Barbie means a lot to her on a personal level as well, since her childhood memories include playing with the dolls with her sister. “I’m so excited,” she said. “My older sister and I used to play with Barbies and create these dramatic fantasy stories, so it’s such a huge honor.”
As Douglas prepares to head to Rio in a few weeks for the 2016 Olympic Games, she says that her plan of attack is to do what she knows works.”I’m just going to do the same thing I did in London. Focus, train really hard, be consistent and go out and enjoy the journey.”
