11-Year-Old Marley Dias Brings #BlackGirlMagic to ‘Elle’
Marley Dias had no idea that her love of books would land her in the boardroom of Elle–but that’s exactly what happened!
The 11-year-old started a book drive (#1000BlackGirlBooks) in an effort to collect stories of women of color, and eventually her campaign went viral, drawing attention from media outlets across the country, including Elle. “During [me and Elle‘s] conversation, I said I wanted to edit a magazine some day. I didn’t expect it to happen so fast! A few months later, ELLE.com invited me to create a zine for the website,” Marley writes in her letter introducing her ‘zine.
Now, Marley has launched her zine and has gotten to interview some pretty impressive celebs, including Misty Copeland and Ava DuVernay. “This issue is about women and girls who have left their imprint on the world,” writes Marley, “Some of them have charted new courses. Some have expanded the way we see the world and what we think is possible. And all the women (and man! Hi, Larry Wilmore!) in Marley Mag are people who have inspired me.”
