Sevyn Streeter has been fortunate enough to make a name for herself in the music industry and as her career continues its trajectory upward, she’s making sure to do her part to help those who haven’t been so fortunate.

The “It Won’t Stop” singer is one of St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital’s celebrity ambassadors and during MommyBrown‘s recent trip to the facility for their Celebration of Hope, we had the chance to chat with her about what inspired her during her visit, what’s surprised her about her St. Jude journey so far and why she feels actually visiting the campus is so necessary.

St. Jude is definitely a special place and Sevyn said she felt inspired just by walking around and seeing all that the campus has to offer its patients and their families. “For me to just be here, I’m so inspired just walking around, seeing the kids and seeing what they do here,” she said. “I just think it’s amazing. I’m like, I wanna do a dance class with the kids or decorate a room or- I just want to come back and help in any way that I possibly can.”

It’s common knowledge that St. Jude doesn’t charge its families for any care, housing or food while they focus their sick child getting well, but Sevyn was most surprised by the extent of the care that goes into the place, especially because it’s free. “I’d heard before that it was free for the families, but to come here and see what they get for free. You know sometimes people will be like ‘Oh it’s free! Ok, here goes a free t-shirt’ or ‘Here’s a free doctor appointment’. No, you come here and the facility is amazing!”

“The detail,” she continued, “they pay such very close attention to detail to make sure that every aspect of these children’s lives are amazing. So for me, I knew that they did it for free, but to come here and see what they get- aside from just the medical attention. The playground and the different vibes in the different rooms- that blew my mind. Like for sure blew my mind.”

Visiting the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital was what really solidified Sevyn’s love and respect for the place, and she encourages everyone out there to visit so that they can see for themselves the amazing work that goes into keeping this place running.

“I encourage [the readers] to come here and tour the ground and tour this place,” she said. “We watch TV, you see the commercials and stuff for St. Jude, but to see that [in person] your heart pours out for them and you want to do something. I encourage [readers] to come here and to actually see what they would be sewing into. You know what I mean? This is a great place to sew into. It’s not something that you just see on TV and it breaks your heart for 2 seconds during a commercial. You’ve gotta come here and develop a real attachment. That has definitely happened to me with this trip.”

The singer believes that paying it forward is a must in the world, but has learned that being involved with St. Jude will also change your life for the better too. “I feel like with the kids here and the experience here, it’ll be a blessing to your life as well. You learn from everybody’s life experiences.”
