St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital Delivers Only The Best for Its Patients
MommyBrown was given the unique opportunity of attending St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital’s annual event, the Celebration of Hope. The weekend was filled with sites to visit and events to attend (more on that later) but the purpose of it all was to showcase the extreme care and attention to detail that goes into making sure the time every family spends at the hospital is as hopeful and happy as possible.
Media Ambassadors were taken on tours of the research facilities, hospital and Target House throughout the weekend, all of which were beautiful, extremely creative and pristinely clean.
Let’s take a closer look at some of the parts of the St. Jude campus that stood out to us!
Chili’s Patient Care Center
The hospital itself was one of the most beautifully decorated and uplifting hospitals that I’ve ever visited. Usually when one thinks hospitals, they don’t think bright colors, artwork everywhere you look and (dare we say it) fun- but those are all themes that run throughout the Chili’s Patient Care Center. Once again, the utmost care is given to the patients starting before they even enter the Care Center- there are Radio Flyer wagons waiting outside for the kids to be wheeled in on!
The halls are decorated with murals and patient artwork- the center has even turned a hallway in the Patient Care Center into a Teen Art Gallery, where the work of talented young patients is displayed during the year and the art that results from these young people’s’ struggles is moving, intense and hopeful.
St. Jude Garden and Kay Kafe
The St. Jude Garden and Kay Kafe were two of the most pleasant surprises of the trip. Touring the facilities and housing was expected, but the nutrition of the food and where it comes from never crossed my mind. All of the vegetables served in the Kay Kafe are organically grown at the St. Jude Garden- and the patients can even help the 25 volunteers who assist the St. Jude gardner tend to the garden.
Once the veggies make it back to the Kay Kafe, patients and their families can choose from a wide variety of foods including sushi, pizza, deli foods, and more. The Kafe is also a great place for everyone at the Care Center to come together- patients and their families eat alongside doctors, scientists and hospital staff to show them that they aren’t so different after all.
St. Jude Target House
The St. Jude Target House is where families that will be at the hospital for more than 90 days are housed. The facility was sponsored by (you guessed it) Target and can accommodate up to 98 families at a time. It’s honestly the coolest housing facility I’ve ever seen, with each common room sponsored by a different company or celebrity sponsor. There’s the the DreamWorks® Studio Room, the Scott Hamilton Family Fitness Center and the Arts and Crafts Room, the Amy Grant Music Room, the Shaun White Great Room, the Sean Conway Play Area, and the Brad Paisley Lodge- and that’s not even the best of it!
The apartments that the families live in during their time at St. Jude aren’t teeny tiny hole-in-the-wall spaces. Each one is fully furnished and includes two bedrooms, one bathroom, a kitchen and living room. During their time at the Target House, families are given weekly Kroger gift cards to buy groceries and are shuttled to and from the St. Jude campus for appointments, as well as to and from a grocery store and twice a month to Target.
Photos really don’t do the Target House justice, but feel free to flip through a few below:
