Dove Highlights What It Means to Be a Real Mom in Their New Baby Dove #RealMoms Campaign

Embracing motherhood as a modern mom means welcoming a slew of opinions from people who think they know how to mother your child better than you. Whether it is regarding a decision to go back to work post-maternity leave or be a stay-at-home mom, choosing to breastfeed or bottle feed, or cloth diapers over disposables – the decisions you make as a mom can often times feel challenged by the public around you.

There is an unspoken pressure that comes with being a mom – that you have to be perfect even though perfection does not exist. In fact, according to a study conducted by Dove, 89% of mothers feel that pressure to feel perfect and 72% of moms wonder if what they do as mothers is even considered to be good enough.

Dove’s Baby Dove campaign seeks to demystify all the beliefs of what motherhood is “supposed” to look like and instead highlight what it is: “There is no right way to do it all.”

In a statement, Vice President of Skin Cleansing for Dove, Nick Soukas says, “Baby Dove wants to help build parents’ confidence and encourage them to trust their way when it comes to doing what they think is best for their baby and themselves.”

With their new campaign #RealMoms, which launched this past Thursday, Dove released a commercial that explores the different faces and experiences that represent modern motherhood. The commercial features a diverse group of women from different walks of life, of different races, who are being a mother the way they want to be a mother. Not the way society tells them or the unfair expectations put on mothers attempts to police them – but on their terms.

Among the seven women featured in the visual, there are single moms, first-time moms, cattle ranchers, trans women, dancers, etc. The commercial serves as a reminder that being a good mom is not as one-dimensional as the one size fits all portrayal of perfection that’s often placed on women. It is perhaps the reason why the poignant commercial is one that readily connects. Motherhood is complex and beautiful because of it.
