By  |

Looks like SpongeBob SquarePants and the gang is ditching Bikini Bottom and heading to Broadway!

Yes, you heard that right! Coming this fall, SpongeBob SquarePants will become a new musical based on Nickelodeons hit cartoon series. According to Playbill.com – in the musical, SpongeBob and residents of Bikini Bottom must come together to save their underwater city from complete destruction.

The show, which premiered in Chicago last summer, will be directed by the creator Tina Landau – a stalwart of the Steppenwolf Theater. SpongeBob SquarePants is reported to feature original music from a variety of music legends like Cyndi Lauper, David Bowie, Yolanda Adams, Steven Tyler and Joe Perry of Aerosmith, T.I., Lady Antebellum and John Legend.

“All of the musicians got a brief on where their song fits in the story, so they weren’t randomly writing songs on the topic of SpongeBob,” book writer Kyle Jarrow shared with Playbill.com. “They knew where it fit in the story.”

The cast will consist of members of the Chicago cast, including Ethan Slater as SpongeBob in his Broadway debut. He will be joined by Lilli Cooper (“Spring Awakening”) as Sandy Cheeks, Gavin Lee (“Mary Poppins”) as Squidward, and Danny Skinner making his Broadway debut as Patrick Star. Fans of Mr. Krabs and Plankton will have to wait until a later date until the rest of the cast is announced.

Broadway previews will begin SpongeBob SquarePants on November 6 with an official opening night scheduled for December 4. Tickets will go on sale June 26 on Ticketmaster.
