Pharrell Shows Us the “Yellow Light” In Latest Visual for ‘Despicable Me 3’ Soundtrack
Creative dynamo Pharrell just dropped a visual for the latest project he’s been working on. The visual is for “Yellow Light” and the project is the Despicable Me 3 soundtrack that the singer/rapper has been serving as executive producer for.
In the visual, we find Pharrell sitting down on some steps, decked out in all yellow sans his pants and pink Timberlands. The day is sunny, and like his choice in outfit, places an emphasis on the ambiance of the vibe being about “yellow light.” Sometime after beginning to sing his tune, a group of Minions discover him while the artist starts strutting down the streets of Hollywood. It proves to be a fruitful game of the follow the leader at first, but the Minions quickly fall off as they become distracted by trails of bananas appearing, leaving Pharrell to his lonesome.
Despite it being a song on the soundtrack of a children’s film, politics can be felt throughout in some of Pharrell’s lyrics. For example, “Everyone’s overdosing the blue light use/United States of anxiety continues/Red is in this tower singing the flag burning blues/We feel like the nuts cause we feel the screws.”
At the end of the video, while allowing “the yellow light shining down” lead him, Pharrell enters another animated world and navigates his way through a video game scene. The colors and the introduction of animation into the video feel very natural, and nods its head to Despicable Me 3 in a way that doesn’t feel jarring to the viewer.
This single acts as the follow-up to the smash hit single “Happy” that Pharrell had on the Despicable Me 2 soundtrack. Pharrell was tapped to executive produce the third movie’s soundtrack, probably to create a vibe and feel that the previous soundtrack did. “Yellow Light” has a lot to live up to because “Happy” was played everywhere and became the best-selling song in the US for the year 2014.
Via a press release, Despicable Me 3 “continues the adventures of Gru, Lucy, their adorable daughters—Margo, Edith and Agnes—and the Minions… Joining Steve Carell and Kristen Wiig in Despicable Me 3 is Emmy, Tony and Grammy Award winner Trey Parker, co-creator of Comedy Central’s global phenomenon South Park and the Broadway smash The Book of Mormon. Parker voices the role of villain Balthazar Bratt, a former child star who’s grown up to become obsessed with the character he played in the ‘80s, and proves to be Gru’s most formidable nemesis to date.”
Despicable Me 3 will have its theatrical release on June 30, while the soundtrack will be released on June 23. Check out the visual for the fun song “Yellow Light” below.
